A Special Event to Celebrate the SPAMI Day 2022

At their COP 22 (Antalya, Turkey, 7-10 December 2021), the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols decided to set up a regional annual celebration: “the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance Day” (SPAMI Day), to be celebrated the 15th of April of each year. COP 22 invited the Barcelona Convention Secretariat (through SPA/RAC) to organize the first edition of the SPAMI Day in 2022 and encouraged the Contracting Parties to support and contribute to these celebrations.

In this context, the United Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) - Barcelona Convention Secretariat, SPA/RAC and the Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement, in partnership with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, organized a Special Event to Celebrate the SPAMI Day 2022, held on 20 May 2022, in Monaco.

This special event brought together stakeholders from the eleven Mediterranean countries which have established the 39 SPAMIs and other key stakeholders, including: SPAMI managers, representatives of national environmental administration and agencies, regional and international organizations, non-governmental organizations and donors.

A high-level segment, to which H.S.H. the Prince Albert II of Monaco took part, was held in this event, and included the delivery of speeches, the distribution of the SPAMI Certificates to SPAMI managers, and a cocktail.
