Launch of a process to extend the perimeter of the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Nature Reserve

In the current context of ecological crisis and growing public awareness, public policies are gradually being implemented to respond to the environmental emergency.

The national strategy for protected areas in France aims to increase the proportion of protected marine and land areas to 30% by 2030, with one third under strong protection, and 5% in the Mediterranean by 2027.

In view of the major challenges of preserving marine environments, the national objectives, the experience acquired by the Pyrénées-Orientales Department (as manager since its creation in 1977) and the demonstration of the effectiveness of the Cerbère-Banyuls Marine Reserve, it has been decided to take steps to extend its perimeter.

The procedure for extending a National Reserve is identical to that for creating one and must be placed based on consultation, in order to associate all the users and actors of the marine environment, as well as the population. Indeed, acceptability must be as broad as possible and it is important to involve the various stakeholders from the outset in order to discuss, collect opinions and proposals and build this project collectively. The first exchanges are very positive and encouraging for the continuation of this process.
