The lack of adequate and sustainable financial resources, along with institutional capacity deficits, are recognized as major obstacles to the effective implementation of management actions in marine and coastal protected areas across all Mediterranean countries.

In Tunisia, to address this challenge, SPA/RAC, in collaboration with APAL and the co-management association of the future MCPA of the Kuriat Islands, Notre Grand Bleu, conducted a legal and institutional study to establish sustainable financing mechanisms for the management of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MCPAs) in Tunisia, including Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMIs). This study was conducted under the NTZ/MPA project funded by MAVA (2022).

The feasibility of 14 sustainable financing mechanisms for MCPAs was studied, taking into account implementation conditions, potential evolutions and improvements of existing legislative and regulatory texts, expected impacts, as well as the feasibility and implementation phase of MCPAs.

This meeting aims to explore and discuss financing mechanisms for the sustainability and sustainable management of MCPAs in Tunisia.
