The Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance (SPAMI) are crucial sites for conserving biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea. These areas host specific ecosystems and essential habitats for threatened species in this region.
Tunisia has three SPAMIs, classified in 2001 for their ecological, aesthetic, and cultural importance, in accordance with Annex I of the Protocol concerning Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity in the Mediterranean (SPA/BD Protocol) of the Barcelona Convention.
Organized by the SPA/RAC, in collaboration with the Coastal Protection and Development Agency (APAL), the seminar aims to explore the scientific interest of Tunisian SPAMIs: La Galite, Zembra and Zembretta, and Kneiss.
From monitoring the marine habitats surrounding these islands to studying birds, for whom SPAMIs represent an essential stopover during their life cycle, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss scientific activities and their contribution to effective management and preservation of biodiversity.
The event is organized on the sidelines of the celebration of the SPAMI Day 2024.
